Hmm, I personally felt that Hirota is a little more nuanced in the novel. You get to know why he's so uptight (his family background, bad with women, etc) so that kind of balances out. his behaviour in the novel is mostly reactionary and serves as a contrast to Nakai's unfounded beliefs in ghosts, so I think Nakai's absence in the manga helped soften him up overall.
